it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

FirstDayofSchool2012

ask any parent of school-aged children and they will tell you that the first day of school is better than christmas {or whatever holiday you celebrate}.  if they say it's not, clearly THEY ARE LYING! yesterday, my kidlets headed back to school.  two different schools:  one to elementary and the other to middle school. middle school.  someone please hold me.  {blog post to come...} anyways, the tuesday after labor day is always our first day of school.  the morning went off without a hitch.  well, except for aidan's rockin' case of bed head.  yeah, he went to school like that.  i learned a LONG time ago to pick my battles. but, here they are, in all of their "first day of school" glory:    so what if it's a cell phone picture & the lighting is bad?!  at least there … [Read more...]

growing pains.

my daughter is ten. need i say more?she's officially a tween & i am officially gray. {okay, so maybe i was already graying years before my daughter hit the double-digits.}long gone are the days of giggles, smiles & little girl innocence.this girl?{malia, age 3, july 2004}{us on the metro in d.c., april 2009}she's been replaced by a moodier, more irritating version of her former self. honestly? my mother says that she is my payback {times a gazillion} for being a moody, irritating tween/teen. i believe her. of course, malia's first birthday should have been an indicator of how things would be:{march 2002}do not get me wrong - i love, love, LOVE my daughter. she is my first born. she is my mini me {maybe that's the problem}. she is my everything.what i don't love is the tumultuous … [Read more...]

private property.

although malia & i talk about things, i bought this book for her:{source}as the mom of a soon-to-be ten year old, i was a little reluctant to purchase it.  i mean, when i picked up the book to look through it, the pages fell open to the section on how to insert a tampon.  i'm not ready for stuff like that.  i know my daughter isn't either.but,she is growing.  she is changing.  she has questions.  she will have more questions.puberty is an awkward time.  so, maybe a book will make things easier...for the both of us.maybe.last weekend, as she was reading the book, she asked:mom, why is it called a pub-ick area?  don't they mean public?{she said pub-ick, not pew-bick}oh.my.word.my answer?because it's most certainly NOT a public area.  no, no.  as a matter of fact, it's private … [Read more...]

best christmas gift ever.

i know, i know, valentine's day is monday so why am i talking about christmas?  malia made this 'snowman' in school.  i think it's pretty damn awesome.  i especially love that it's made out of a brick.  y'all did know that adam is a bricklayer, right?it currently sits on the hearth.  i don't think we'll ever use it for it's intended purpose - a doorstop - but, instead, we'll keep it on display year round because we're in love with our daughter's creativity and thoughtfulness.  it really was the best christmas gift ever. … [Read more...]

double the birthday fun.

malia's birthday was on friday. adam's birthday is today. no parties {not yet, at least*}. no fancy dinners {chinese take-out doesn't count}. we didn't even have birthday cake. well, we had an ice cream cake on friday night for malia, so i guess that counts for something. i did bake cupcakes per malia's request on saturday afternoon, but even those were pretty much gone by the time sunday morning rolled around.as for adam's birthday, it's on a monday. we have nothing planned. honestly, the older you get, the more it just becomes another day. irregardless, i'm sure we'll do something because i certainly can't expect adam to cook dinner on his own birthday!happy birthday, l♥ve...we're finally the same age {at least for the next six months...ha!}.*malia's actual birthday celebration … [Read more...]
