it’s the most wonderful time of the year!

FirstDayofSchool2012

ask any parent of school-aged children and they will tell you that the first day of school is better than christmas {or whatever holiday you celebrate}.  if they say it's not, clearly THEY ARE LYING! yesterday, my kidlets headed back to school.  two different schools:  one to elementary and the other to middle school. middle school.  someone please hold me.  {blog post to come...} anyways, the tuesday after labor day is always our first day of school.  the morning went off without a hitch.  well, except for aidan's rockin' case of bed head.  yeah, he went to school like that.  i learned a LONG time ago to pick my battles. but, here they are, in all of their "first day of school" glory:    so what if it's a cell phone picture & the lighting is bad?!  at least there … [Read more...]

Catalina Island Camps

i never went away to camp.  ever.  in fact, i didn't start camping until i was an adult {and long weekends at a campground one dune away from the atlantic ocean probably doesn't equate to camping to some people}.  i don't know what it's like to have the summer camp experience.  you know, a week away from home, kind of on your own, making new friends, learning new things...gaining valuable life experiences and making memories that will be with you forever. last week, my daughter brought home a flyer about a camp she would like to attend this summer.  and, last night, i received an email about a phenomenal camping opportunity for school-aged children.  of course, the camp is all the way in california, but - holy moly - after reading about catalina island camps, i kind of wish i was … [Read more...]

my eight year old eats what?

so there is a pretty popular book circulating the parenting set about expanding your child's particular palate. i haven't read it, so please forgive me if what i'm about to say seems harsh but...do you really need to read a book to figure out how to get your picky eater to eat?in my opinion, no. i believe that picky parents produce picky children. why? well, if you don't like it, what makes you think your child is going to like it? i was raised by parents who believed that you ate what you were given. if you didn't like it, you either sat there until you ate it or you went hungry. and - surprise, surprise - i am raising my children the same way. i'm not a short order cook. my kitchen is not a restaurant. there is a menu, but there is only one thing on it: you get what you get & you … [Read more...]

me, as a parent.

this post has been in the works for a while. and, when i say "in the works," i really mean that the idea has been in my head {and my heart} for quite some time. up until now, i never really knew how i wanted to word things. honestly? i still am not entirely certain if this post will come across the way i want it to, but...what the heck.going from childless to being a parent was a big change. going from parenting one child to parenting two children was a big change.parenting a boy versus parenting a girl? i'm still trying to figure that out.in the past, i've been accused of loving & treating my children differently. and, while i might deny ever doing so, deep in my heart i know it's true. to most people, it isn't obvious. but to others - like my mother - the distinction is very blatant … [Read more...]

the first day & my accent {or whatever you wanna call it}.

adam & i waved good-bye to the kids this morning around 7:25 as they boarded the school bus.{not the greatest picture, but you get the idea}first day at a new school.first day riding the bus...again.first day of malia's last year of elementary school.adam buzzed aidan's head last night. clearly, he looks like a different boy from the one pictured in yesterday's blog post. {for the record: i prefer buzz cut aidan over crazy hair aidan. he just looks so much more mature.}seeing the kids get on the bus this morning was bittersweet. they're growing up so fast. so, so fast.okay, enough about me wah-wah-wah-ing about my kidlets & their first day of school, how about my first ever vlog. it's a good time. promise.as promised...my accent vlog:just to be fair, i'll post the "directions:"say … [Read more...]
